Standby Generator Set

A standby generator set is also known as a "genset". Standby generator sets are different than the more common portable generator and industrial generator gensets. Standby generators have greater power capacity, are programmable and are utilized mainly for emergency backup power. Standby generator sets are also used for power in factories or to keep the load (and cost) to a minimum from the city power grid.

Standby generator sets come in single and 3 phase. Single phase gensets typically operate at 120/240 volts. 240 volt loads will be too much for the smaller standby generator sets design for home use. 3 phase generator sets may operate at 480 volts and are commonly utilized for large applications. Standby generator sets are available in two fuels; natural gas/LP and also as diesel generators.

Small standby generator sets  are rotating field generators. Voltage is created by residual magnetism in the rotor core.  This voltage is created into DC voltage (direct  current) by it being fed into a diode bridge.  The DC voltage is transferred into AC (alternating current) as it exits the unit.

Standby generator sets may be designed as portable generators.  These generators are small and have manual switches that must be activated personally.  Automatic transfer switches are an optional feature with most standby generator sets.  The automatic transfer switch is the device that controls the programs you have entered and will be activated automatically to come online upon a power failure.  Only the attachment of a automatic transfer switch will cause your generator to activate unless you do it by hand.
